Multi-site Conferences

A Multipoint Conference Unit (MCU) is a special piece of equipment that enables more than two participants to share the same conference. It works to aggregate a number of video signals together and then sends only one video and audio signal back out. The operation of an MCU is transparent to the majority of users, and can normally manage conferences with a dozen participants without any problems. An MCU is also required when connecting more than one user to the same external Gateway (see Links and Gateways page).

MCUs are able to manage how images and participants are shown as explained in this page on Viewing Options. It is also possible to use a MCU as part of a security policy. For example incoming calls might all be banned except for those from a known MCU. This allows anyone in the world to connect theoretically via the MCU (where they must be registered as users) while preventing any outsiders connecting to the school without permission.
