National responses to climate change – What is being done?

The UK government has agreed to be part of the Kyoto Protocol. All of the main political parties support this. However, people and businesses need energy, and most energy sources produce Carbon dioxide. The cost of energy is rising.

How energy needs can be met is a complicated matter. In July 2006 the government published its review of this. Greater energy efficiency and renewable energy sources were seen as part of the solution.

More controversially, creating new nuclear power stations was suggested as a possibility. [Nuclear power creates little Carbon dioxide, but many people are concerned that it has other, extreme environmental and safety risks].

As well as the government, many other national bodies are thinking and acting in response to climate change. They include businesses, researchers, campaigners, designers… and educators.
