Local responses to climate change – What is being done?
Local Agenda 21
At the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, the United Nations agreed that there was a need for local plans for sustainable development: meeting the needs of people and the environment. Since then, thousands of local authorities all over the world have drawn up their own Local Agenda 21 strategy, for ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, both now and in the future.
Nottingham declaration
Starting with the City of Nottingham, many UK towns and cities have also signed a declaration promising to take action on climate change. In countries like the US, similar agreements have been made by states and cities, even though the national government does not yet support the Kyoto Protocols.
As well as councils and local authorities, many other people are thinking globally and acting locally in response to climate change. They include businesses, campaigners, community organisations… and schools.
